An English major or minor provides
excellent preparation for a wide variety of careers, including business and industry,
government, media, and teaching. It also is essential preparation for law school. In fact,
English majors can be found everywhere, from Wall Street to Washington, from Hollywood to
your high school. English not only introduces students to the finest literature but also
teaches students to think critically and to write well, two skills in high demand in
today's marketplace. Not only will you acquire marketable skills, but you will also gain
an understanding of yourself and other people--which ultimately may be your most valuable
asset. |
| We have the faculty to support you
and to lead you toward these goals. Our professors hold advanced degrees from the nation's
finest universities, including Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, Illinois, Texas,
Carnegie-Mellon, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Brown. The English department faculty have
received more teaching awards than faculty in any other department on campus. Our resident
poets, dramatists, fiction and non-fiction writers are well published and highly regarded.
In fact, we run the Commonwealth's oldest writing conference, now approaching its fifth
decade. |

The Department of English and
Theatre offers instruction in literature, in writing, and in language study. This
instruction is designed for pre-professional students, those who plan to teach, those who
want to develop their writing abilities, and those who want to broaden their insight into
the nature of language and literature. We also offer courses in reading and study skills, basic instruction for speakers
of English as a second language, and small, intensive classes for students who have been
away from formal learning situations for a period of time or who need to brush up on
certain skills before entering advanced courses. Academic assistance is also offered in
the Writing Center. |
