Required Courses for Technical Writing Emphasis

In addition to the 24 hours of core courses required for the English major, the technical writing emphasis requires 15 hours of courses related to technical writing, plus 18 hours of supporting courses.  See the current EKU catalog for full descriptions of required and supporting courses.

Technical Writing Courses – 15 Hours Required:

ENG 300 Introduction to Technical and Professional Writing
Prerequisites: ENG 101 and 102 (or 105). Introductory course in principles of effective writing for professions and technical fields. Experience in writing with technology for various purposes and audiences relevant to students’ career interests. Special sections arranged in cooperation with professional programs.

ENG 400 Advanced Technical Writing and Document Production
Prerequisites: ENG 300. Advanced in technical communication. Emphasis on theories of technical writing and writing with technology, document developing electronic literacies.

ENG 420 Stylistics, Editing, and Publishing
Prerequisites: ENG 101 and 102 (or 105) and 301. Development of prose style through analysis, practice, and editing.

ENG 500 Topics in Professional Writing (can be taken twice and will include practicum)
Prerequisites: ENG 101 and 102 (or 105), 301, 302, and one additional ENG course; or departmental approval. Study and practice in selected areas of professional writing. May be retaken with different topics to a maximum of six hours. If subtopic is “Writing for Popular Media,” no credit to students with JOU 480.

ENG 510 Linguistic Theory Prerequisites: ENG 101 and 102 (or 105), 301, and one additional ENG course. An introduction to current linguistic theory and practice. To meet this requirement, students may substitute one crossover course to be selected from the following Creative Writing courses:  ENG 306 Introduction to Creative Writing; 307 Creative Nonfiction, 406 Topics in Creative Writing, or 502 Advanced Creative Writing.

Supporting Course Requirements - 18 Hours Required:

Six hours of a particular foreign language or American Sign Language and 12 hours from any three of the following tracks:
