Poetry Marathon
The EKU Poetry Marathon is a 24 hour poetry reading held annually in April. The Department of English welcomes and encourages all of Eastern’s community to attend the session which begins at 12 noon and ends at 12 noon the next day. The Poetry Marathon is held as part of Eastern Kentucky University's way of celebrating National Poetry Month. Having designed and developed the Marathon's web site this year with the assistance of my wife Shelly Harris, I was privileged with a first hand look at how many people sign up and how eager they are to do so. Dr. Margaret Dean, who attends the marathon regularly, said that the EKU Poetry Marathon "helps students at EKU understand that English literature isn't just about reading novels. It broadens student's awareness of what it means to read literature, as well as broadens many faculty members' horizons about contemporary poetry." As usual, this year’s Marathon was a success, having collected approximately $800 to donate to the Madison County Public Library.
