Residency Activities

The Summer Residency in Edinburgh is either two or four weeks of intensive workshops, lectures, readings, and author socials. Focusing on individual writing, MFA students experience the richness of a full semester of writing craft and critical analysis of their and their peers' creative works. The typical day includes morning workshops in poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. Workshops are led by program faculty and visiting writers. Afternoons may be free or dedicated to craft lectures and readings. Informal dinners with faculty and visiting writers and organized readings in local venues round out the days. In addition to writing-intensive activities, other organized activities are offered such as theatre nights and castle tours.

Residency Facilities

Classes for Summer Residencies are held at Napier University in the heart of Scotland's capital city. Spacious, modern, and reasonably priced university housing is being made available to all residency participants, along with meal plans.

Residencies and Degree Requirements

Four sections of ENW 800 Writing Residency are required to obtain the MFA. Each section is 3 credit hours. Each Winter Residency in Lexington earns 3 credits. The Summer Residency earns either 3 credits (if you stay two weeks) or 6 credits (if you stay four weeks). Two month-long Summer Residencies will fulfill the residency requirement. You may also combine credits from Winter and Summer Residencies, but a total of 12 hours must be earned (ENW 800).

Our Partnership with UNO

The Summer Residency is produced and co-sponsored by the University of New Orleans. Students in the MFA Program at EKU register for the Summer Residency through the UNO web site. You must also register for the Summer Residency (ENW 800) through EKU as you would any other class. All fees are paid directly to EKU through your normal payment process. Credits earned during the Summer Residency (3 credits for two weeks; 6 credits for four weeks) will automatically apply toward your degree as with all other classes. When registering through the UNO web site, select the "EKU Students Only" option.
