Applying to the Program

Writing Sample

Applicants should submit a portfolio of work in their preferred creative genre, or combination of genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction). Writing samples should be sent directly, as a single Word document, to the program coordinator at eng.mfa@eku.edu.

The writing sample should consist of:
  • A two-page statement of purpose addressing the applicant’s reasons for applying to the program.
  • Approximately 15 pages of poetry or 20 pages of prose (fiction and creative nonfiction).

Other Information:

  • Applicants should have completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree, with (in most cases) at least a minor in English, or should be prepared to complete additional undergraduate coursework in creative writing and upper-division English prior to full admission to the program.
  • Ordinarily, a 3.0 standing GPA should have been achieved in upper-division English courses at the undergraduate level.
  • Applicants must meet the general requirements of the EKU Graduate School, and they must achieve satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination.
  • The MFA Admissions Committee reserves the right to waive any of the above requirements in the event that a writing sample is deemed exceptional.

Application Deadlines:

  • Students may enter the program during Fall or Spring semester, as well as during the annual Winter Residency (held in early January each year in Lexington, Kentucky) or the annual Summer Residency (held in July each year in Edinburgh, Scotland).
  • Completed applications are due at least three weeks prior to the scheduled beginning of any semester.
