Degree Requirements


A minimum of 48 credit hours are required to satisfy the requirements for the MFA in Creative Writing; students will complete the following courses:

ENW 800 Writing Residency

  • Four sections are required.
  • Each section earns 3 credit hours.
  • A total of 12 credit hours are required.
Winter Residency: An intensive 10-12 day residency in Lexington, Kentucky, that counts as 1 section (held during the first two weeks of January).
Summer Residency: An intensive 2-week or 4-week residency held in Edinburgh, Scotland, that counts as either 1 or 2 sections depending on length of stay (3 hours of credit for two weeks or 6 hours of credit for 4 weeks).


ENW 810 Topics in Creative Writing

  • Four sections are required.
  • Each section earns 3 credit hours.
  • A total of 12 credit hours are required.
An online literature course for creative writers. Students read extensively in contemporary literature and write critical essays in response to those readings.

ENW 820 Low-residency Mentoring/Workshop

  • Four sections are required.
  • Each section earns 6 credit hours.
  • A total of 24 credit hours are required.
Students participate in an intensive online writing workshop conducted via Blackboard, conference call, and/or other media. Students work privately with the instructor as well on a series of comprehensive revisions of their creative work. Students also read extensively in contemporary literature and write critical essays in response to those readings.
