How do I apply to the program?

Writing Sample
Applicants should submit a portfolio of work in their preferred creative genre, or combination of genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction). Writing samples should be sent directly, as a Word attachment, to the program coordinator at eng.mfa@eku.edu.
The writing sample should consist of:

  • Approximately 15 pages of poetry or/and 20 pages of prose.
  • A two-page statement of purpose addressing the applicant’s reasons for applying to the program.

Other Information:

  • Applicants should have completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree, with (in most cases) at least a minor in English, or should be prepared to complete additional undergraduate coursework in creative writing and upper-division English prior to full admission to the program.
  • Ordinarily, a 3.0 standing should have been achieved in upper-division English courses at the undergraduate level.
  • Applicants must meet the general requirements of the EKU Graduate School, and they must achieve satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination.
  • The MFA Admissions Committee reserves the right to waive any of the above requirements in the event that a writing sample is deemed exceptional.

Application Deadlines:

  • Students may enter the program during any regular fall or spring semester, as well as during the annual Winter Residency (held in early January each year in Lexington, KY) or the annual Summer Residency (held in June and July each year in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico).
  • Completed applications are due at least three weeks prior to the scheduled beginning of any semester.

To access the online graduate application, or for more information about EKU graduate admissions, please visit Graduate School or call (859) 622-1745.
