program requirements

Students are advised to consult the current Graduate Catalog  (available on the Graduate School webpage) and the Program Coordinator to make sure they are fulfilling the appropriate requirements.


Required Courses:
      Three core courses (should be completed within the first two semesters):
1)             ENG 801      Introduction to Graduate Study [typically offered fall semester]
(students for whom Degree Works indicates a requirement of ENG 809 or 812 should contact the Program Coordinator)
2)             ENG 808       Modern Composition Theory [typically offered spring and summer semesters]

3)             ENG 833       Modern Literary Criticism [typically offered spring and summer semesters]
             
      One literature course (ENG 730, 750, 825, 830, 850, 853,854, 870,873, 876, 878, 880) [multiple courses in this category are offered each semester]

      One language studies course (ENG 710, 715, 720, 807, 810, 825, EMS 775) [multiple courses in this category are offered each semester]




Students have a choice of thesis or non-thesis option:

For the non-thesis option, students must complete an additional 15 hours of electives in English to meet the requirement of 30 total hours for a Master of Arts in English; students also are required to write a mentored scholarly paper.

For the thesis option, students complete six hours of thesis credit, ENG 898: Thesis I and ENG 899: Thesis II, plus any necessary electives to meet the requirement of 30 total hours for a Master of Arts in English. Consult the Program Coordinator for information regarding registering for ENG 898/899. Thesis guidelines and requirements are available to currently enrolled students on the program Blackboard site.

All students are required to pass the Comprehensive Examination. Comprehensive exam information, including reading guidelines, is available to currently enrolled students on the program Blackboard site.
