I. General Information
9. What books can help me prepare for and complete the exam?
You may wish to purchase some of these handbooks and guides after you have
perused them and selected those you find most useful. Most are available in
the EKU Bookstore.
- The American Heritage Dictionary. This is an excellent reference
book and a useful guide for usage as well as spelling.
- Hult, Christine, and Thomas N. Huckin. The New Century Handbook.
Second Edition. Boston: Pearson, 2002. This text is required of all Eastern's
English 101 and 102 sections.
- Strunk, William, and E. B. White. The Elements of Style. Still
available in paperback after more than forty years in print, this remains
the classic guide for writing clearly and briefly.
- Webster's New World Dictionary. Though not a college dictionary,
it is a concise, paperback guide to spelling and vocabulary.
- Zinsser, William. On Writing Well. This stylistic handbook is strongly
recommended by and for those who write in the workplace.
