I. General Information
8. How do I prepare for the UWR exam?
Though most students do well on the UWR exam, a few fail. Students who are
at risk can do a number of things to prepare for the UWR exam. Here are a few
ideas:
- After studying Chapter 23 in this text, try using the sample prompts to
write practice essays. Then, have someone evaluate the effort. The writing
consultants in the Writing Center (Case Annex 173, phone 859-622-6191) will
give you feedback, if you choose to consult them. They are familiar with
the UWR and are trained to help you improve.
- Take writing and reading seriously. Ask your instructors for appropriate
strategies to use in completing written assignments. Practice supporting your
ideas with evidence. Ask the instructor for specific feedback on the quality of
your written assignments in all written course work. Use reading as a model for
writing: when you read newspapers or newsmagazines, notice how arguments are
constructed and how evidence is marshaled to make a case.
Those seriously "at risk" for failure may want to consider these options:
- Audit, or re-take for credit, English 101 or 102.
- Take ACS 201 (Business Communication), which may be used as the 03 General
Education Requirement in some cases.
