I. General Information
2. What is the purpose of the UWR examination?
To assure that students in baccalaureate degree programs
at Eastern Kentucky University possess effective writing skills, the faculty,
Council of Deans, and Board of Regents have instituted a University Writing
Requirement (UWR). In the semester immediately after you have completed 60 semester
credit hours of course work applicable to graduation, you must take the writing
requirement exam. Transfer students who transfer to EKU with 60 credit hours
or more must take the exam in the first semester of enrollment.
EKU has instituted this writing requirement to encourage you to develop and
maintain good writing skills because you will need them in the future as well
as now. Good writing goes hand in hand with good thinking, the goal of education.
Most university courses, especially upper-division courses, require that you
demonstrate successful writing in essays, in tests, and in papers. Also, the
ability to write well is what employers expect of a college graduate. In addition
many civic, voluntary, and avocational activities require you to effectively
convey your ideas and opinions in writing.
