19. What is the role of the Writing Center?
If you have failed the UWR, you should immediately call the Writing Center to make a thirty minute appointment with the Director or the Assistant Director to go over your exam. This conference should help you decide how to proceed to get ready to re-take the UWR. You must make an appointment if you wish to discuss your essay. No same-day appointments are accepted.
Though closed during exam periods, the Writing Center maintains regular hours while classes are in session, including Summer sessions. The Director will read through your essay with you and explain why the readers assigned your essay failing scores. The Director is a UWR scorer as well as a member of the UWR Advisory Committee and, therefore, is able to explain the process to you, apply the official scoring guide to your exam, and suggest appropriate means of preparing for the next exam. It is important for you to know that the Writing Center Directors cannot change your score or your credit hour limitations. The role of the Directors is to help you improve your skills so that you can be successful when you re-take the exam.
