I. General Information

18. How does my advisor help if I fail the UWR?

If you fail the exam, you should immediately set up an appointment with your advisor. You may choose whether to see first your advisor or the director of the Writing Center; however, before you register for another semester, your advisor needs to go over with you your remediation plan - or help you develop one if you have not yet worked out such a plan with the Writing Center director. Call 859-622-6191 to make an appointment with the Writing Center.

This remediation plan needs to include a realistic target date for your retaking the examination; remember, however, that there is no point in retaking until you have understood and solved the problems which caused you to fail.

Your advisor will also help you plan how to choose courses in view of the restriction on hours you may take because of your failure. It will be important to plan your next semesters' courses carefully so you may move as expeditiously as possible toward graduation; you may need to allocate credits for taking or repeating writing courses or may decide to audit a writing course. Making these decisions may take more time than the advising for the next semester's schedule usually takes, so you should set up an appointment with your advisor well in advance of the date you expect to register.

If your failure occurs as you approach one hundred credits, you will especially need your advisor's help in deciding how to proceed with as little delay as possible.

It is important that you realize that your advisor cannot appeal your UWR failure and cannot change the limitations on the number of hours you can take as a result of not satisfying the writing requirement.
